So everywhere I go in the summer time, I still carry an extra layer with me. FINALLY, last week got warm enough for me to walk around in Colorado with shorts on and not freeze (so, you know, 90°), which means that naturally every indoor space felt it necessary to set their air conditioners to POLAR. I’m still trying to decide which is colder: winter, or summer inside.
So when I saw that Indiesew’s latest collection, a collaboration with eco-conscious clothing line Seamly, featured a lightweight knit cardigan, I jumped at the chance to sew up this warm-weather staple. The Seamly Wrapped Cardigan is one of three designs that are being discontinued from Seamly’s retail line (boo) but being offered up as sewing patterns to Indiesew customers looking to make their own (yay)!
I selected the fabric for my Wrapped Cardigan from Indiesew’s new rayon jersey fabric line. It coordinates beautifully with these patterns as it has just the right amount of stretch and recovery, and this rayon blend is incredibly high quality. The wrapped cardigan is a bigger piece, what with all the drape, and the cut of fabric I received to sew it up weighed what seemed about ten pounds. Ironically, though, it’s a great thickness for summer and doesn’t feel hot or heavy at all when I put it on.
As a relative newbie to knits, it always amazes me how knit garment pattern pieces come in weirdo shapes but always end up looking fabulous at the end. The Wrapped Cardigan has some seriously funky pattern pieces, but they all go together really easily to form a long cardigan with front facings that wrap behind the neck and form a cool curved back yoke. They also form optional front pockets, which are great for carrying cash or spy goggles or whatever you’d like, and an angled hem that looks a lot harder than it is.
Combined with the fabric, I loved the chic silhouette of this instant wardrobe basic, and I love having a garment that will keep me warm (but not hot) in modern A/C climes and transition perfectly into fall and winter, too.
