I have big news today that’s been in the works ever since Quilt Market earlier this year: my first custom quilt design is up for sale on PatternJam! Lauren’s Lattice is based on the intricate lattice pattern of the palmetto tree, an environmental constant when I was living in South Carolina years ago. The unique geometry of palmetto fronds inspired me daily, and I’ve always known that they would make an awesome quilt!
If you’re not familiar with PatternJam, this company is an absolute godsend for busy quilters with lots of design sense. You create your own custom quilt design (or select a pre-made custom design like mine), and then you’re able to personalize it with hundreds of prints, blenders, and solids right on the website to make it your very own. My quilt top features four different fabric colors to customize. Use bold prints, tone-on-tone or low-volume fabrics, or coordinating colors. I’ve had the best luck with high contrast and lots of variety in the scale of the prints, but the beauty of PatternJam is that it’s your party and your quilt, so you can do whatever you’d like. Choose from a 48″ square quilt top for a smaller baby quilt, or a 48″ x 57″ top for the perfect throw-sized creation. Want it even bigger? Add borders around the edges to frame the print perfectly.
Then PatternJam prints the quilt top and ships it right to your door, ready to quilt. No piecing required at all! It’s great for making quilts as gifts (or using as quilt backs!), and the ability to customize your own quilt top satisfies the creative urge without creating a lot of time and trouble. This way, you can select your own fabric but get right to the quilting part. It’s the perfect blend of customization and convenience. BOOM.
I originally created the lattice pattern as a paper-pieced block, with the long-term goal of publishing a pattern. But I found that I just hated sewing it: my design included too many unavoidably weird shapes and bias edges, and I kept struggling with slipping fabric and points not lining up quite right. I vacillated between loving the design but hating the process. I’m so glad this cool geometric quilt can now become a more achievable reality on PatternJam.
And the best news for you? My design, along with anything else you order from PatternJam, is 20% off now through October 7 with code RIGHTSIDESTOGETHER. Get started on holiday gifts, whip up a quilt in a weekend for your fall decorating, or try playing with new color combinations. And don’t forget to tag me and PatternJam on Instagram @rightsidestogether and @patternjam. We can’t wait to see what you make!
